When the so-called COVID crisis hit Guatemala in mid-March 2020, the government of Guatemala shutdown services they deemed non-essential. That has left millions without work. Even before the crisis 50% of children did not receive enough calories in their diet. From March through June 2020 an additional 300,000 people have been thrust into the category of Extreme Poverty. That means they are a high risk physically from lack of food.
As a response our ministry is focusing on key areas where local pastors have the ability locally to purchase, package and distribute food to needy families. From March 202o to date we are continuing to host food outreaches. Since 2020 we have been able to fund 250 outreaches that impacted more than 10,000 families and provided more than 2,000,000 meals. We anticipate continuing these compassion projects for the foreseeable future as funds are available.
We send funds through a pastor who coordinates the project locally and provides us receipts, photos and report. We have heard dozens of reports of people crying with gratitude to receive a little food and a lot of hope.
This has been a tremendous testimony for the local church. We are so deeply grateful for our partners who pray and support this ongoing effort. We need to both expand this effort as well has return to some very at risk communities, especially in remote rural areas.
