Kids Reaching Un-reached Kids
Our goal is to reach the unreached children in San Juan la Laguna, in the Guatemalan state of Sololá.
San Juan is a community of nearly 100% indigenous peoples who trace their ancestry back to the Mayans. There is still a mejor focus on Mayan religion mixed with Catholicism, strong form of syncretism. Pastor Juan Boceo says that there are less than 4% evangelicals in the community.
Pastor Juan resigned from a good position with World Vision two years ago to accept the challenge of planting a new work in San Juan as an Assemblies of God pastor.
He built a small rustic church and parsonage where he lives Diana is wife and three teenage children (19, 17, 15), all who are part of this ministry. They all have their own Bible class. Two classes meet outdoors under a tree, one under a piece of tin without walls, and another in a room the size of a broom closet. Pastor Juan is also highly involved in Royal Rangers which in his area includes boys and girls.
Our goal is to build a church with three levels; the first level a sanctuary, the second level classrooms and the third level living quarters for the Pastor’s family. Pastor Juan and Pastora Diana have a strong education background. They want to start a Christian school to teach children reading, writing, arithmetic and the Word of God
PROJECT GOAL: $150,000
This project with help establish a church that is focused on the spiritual, physical, mental and emotional formation of children. The people in the community disparage Pastor Juan, saying that he is not a real pastor … he is only “a children’s pastor” because he is attending to so many kids. He wears it as a badge of honor in a community that tends to devalue the importance of children and young teens.
